How the calculation works
- Yearly pay. Monthly pay x 12, weekly pay x 52, or daily pay x days a week x 52.
- Hours in a year. Days a week x hours a day x 52. Full time is 2,080.
- Hourly rate. Yearly pay / hours in a year.
- Daily rate. Yearly pay / (days a week x 52).
Paid holidays are included in the hours on purpose: a salary pays for them, so they belong in the hourly figure. If you want the rate for hours you actually work, take your leave days off the 52 weeks.
Singapore: the Ministry of Manpower's own formulas
For monthly-rated employees covered by the Employment Act. These are what an employer uses for overtime, rest days and part months, and they differ from the general method above.
- Hourly basic rate (for overtime): (12 x monthly basic pay) / (52 x 44). Overtime is at least 1.5 times this.
- Daily rate: (12 x monthly pay) / (52 x days you are required to work a week).
- Incomplete month: monthly gross pay / working days in that month x days actually worked. The day rate calculator does this one.

Freelance rate calculatorFrequently asked questions
How do I convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate in Singapore?
Multiply the monthly salary by 12 to get the yearly figure, then divide by the hours you work in a year. Full time at 8 hours a day, 5 days a week is 2,080 hours a year, so $1,300 a month is $15,600 a year and $7.50 an hour.
How do I work out a daily rate from a salary?
Divide the yearly salary by the days you work in a year. Five days a week for 52 weeks is 260 days, so $1,300 a month is $60.00 a day.
Should a freelancer charge the same hourly rate as an employee earns?
No. An employee is paid for holidays, sick days and time between tasks, and the employer covers equipment, software and often insurance and pension. A freelancer pays for all of that and can usually bill only part of their working week, so a freelance rate is normally well above the salary-equivalent hourly figure. The freelance rate calculator works out the number from your own costs.
What is $7.50 an hour in US dollars?
About $5.86 an hour at the latest SGD rate we fetched. The local figures on this page are exact; only the dollar column depends on the exchange rate.
How does MOM calculate the hourly rate for overtime in Singapore?
For a monthly-rated employee, the Ministry of Manpower gives the hourly basic rate of pay as (12 x monthly basic rate of pay) / (52 x 44), and overtime must be paid at least 1.5 times that rate. Check mom.gov.sg for whether the Employment Act rules apply to your job.
How do I calculate salary for an incomplete month in Singapore?
MOM's formula is the monthly gross rate of pay divided by the total working days in that month, multiplied by the days actually worked. The day rate calculator on this site does exactly that.
