The Upwork service fee for freelancers

Upwork describes the Freelancer Service Fee as the fee you pay on your Upwork earnings, ranging from 0% to 15% per contract. Upwork says the rate is set from several factors meant to keep different kinds of work competitive. It does not publish a formula, so you cannot predict the rate for a job before you see it.

What Upwork does commit to, on its help page:

  • You see the rate first. The percentage is shown when a client sends you an offer or when you submit a proposal.
  • It is locked in. Once a proposal, offer or contract is sent, the fee for that contract does not change. Different contracts can have different fees.
  • It applies to everything you earn on the contract. Hourly, fixed-price and Project Catalog work, and bonuses.
  • It is refunded with the payment. If money paid to you is refunded to the client, Upwork returns the service fee it charged on that amount.
  • There are no regular discounts. Upwork says it may run occasional promotions.

There are exceptions. Freelancers paid through Upwork Payroll, and those on Any Hire contracts, do not pay the service fee. Direct Contracts with a client you brought to Upwork carry a reduced fee. Enterprise clients are set up individually; Upwork says freelancers working with them typically pay 10%.

What the service fee costs on real numbers

Because the rate varies by contract, here is what a $1,000 contract leaves you at different rates in Upwork's range. The arithmetic is ours; the range is Upwork's.

Service fee on the contractFee on $1,000You receive
0%$0$1,000
5%$50$950
10%$100$900
15%$150$850

To take home a target amount, divide it by what you keep. Upwork's own example: to take home $20 an hour on a contract with a 10% fee, charge $22.22 an hour. Upwork's fee calculator does the same sum for any amount.

Upwork Connects: the cost of applying

Connects are the tokens freelancers spend to submit proposals, and also to boost a proposal to the top of a client's list or to show an Availability Badge. As of October 2026 they cost $0.15 each and are sold in bundles. The number a proposal needs varies by job and can change while the job is open; Upwork shows it on the job post.

The detail that matters most for your budget is when Connects come back. According to Upwork, Connects are returned if the client cancels the project before a contract is made, or if Upwork removes the post for breaking its terms. They are not returned when the client rejects your proposal, chooses someone else or lets the job expire without hiring, or when you withdraw. Returned Connects go back into your account for reuse, not as cash.

Some freelancers get free Connects: Upwork lists one-off bonuses for new users, occasional monthly allowances, 30 Connects for each talent badge (Rising Talent, Top Rated, Top Rated Plus) and rewards for some activity. The Freelancer Plus membership also includes a monthly allowance; check Upwork's site for its current price.

What Connects add to the real fee

An illustration of the method, with example numbers rather than data: if you send 20 proposals that each need 15 Connects, that is 300 Connects, or $45. If one of those proposals wins a $1,000 contract at a 10% service fee, Upwork's total take on that job is $100 in fees plus the $45 you spent to win it: $145, or 14.5% of the contract. Your own proposal-to-hire rate decides this number, so it is worth tracking.

Upwork fees for clients

Clients on Upwork's free Basic plan pay a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on all payments to freelancers, including hourly and fixed-price contracts, bonuses and expenses. Qualifying US clients who pay from a bank account pay a reduced 3%. The fee is higher on the Business Plus plan, and Upwork notes it is not refundable even if a payment is reversed. A client fee does not come out of the freelancer's earnings, but it does raise the total cost of hiring, which can affect how much a client is willing to pay.

On WorkOfficially, a milestone the client funds in WRK carries no platform fee and no client service fee; card-funded work carries the fees above. For a fuller comparison see Upwork vs Fiverr, the best Upwork alternatives and our fees page. We run WorkOfficially, so read our row with that in mind.

Hourly vs fixed-price contracts on Upwork

Upwork says its service fee is the same whether a contract is hourly or fixed-price, and it applies to every payment on the contract, including bonuses. What changes is how you are protected. On fixed-price contracts the client funds milestones before you start; on hourly contracts your protection depends on logging time with Upwork's tools. Read Upwork's payment protection pages for the conditions before you start work, because hours logged in the wrong way may not be covered.

The fee also comes off before the money reaches you, so set your hourly rate or milestone amounts with it already included. A milestone of $500 at a 10% fee pays you $450; to receive $500 you need a milestone of about $555.56.

Six ways to pay less in Upwork fees

  1. Check the fee before every proposal. It is shown up front and varies by contract; factor it into the rate you bid.
  2. Price the fee in. Divide your target rate by what you keep, rather than absorbing the fee.
  3. Apply less, but better. Connects spent on long-shot proposals are not returned when you are not hired.
  4. Earn the free Connects you qualify for. Badges and activity rewards are listed on Upwork's Connects page.
  5. Bring your own clients through Direct Contracts if you already have them, which Upwork says carries a reduced fee.
  6. Keep your reputation portable. If you add a second platform, import your Upwork reviews so you are not forced to underprice to rebuild them.

What we expect from Upwork fees in 2027

What we expect in 2027

  • The variable per-contract model stays. Upwork has built its fee display, calculator and help pages around it.
  • Freelancers compare their effective rate per job, fees plus Connects, rather than the headline percentage.
  • Upwork keeps using Connects rewards and promotions to manage the cost of applying, alongside the basic price.

These are our expectations, not Upwork's announcements. Upwork's own help pages are the only reliable source for its current fees, and we will update this page when they change.
